The Year We Brought the Cherry Blossoms to Your Living Room
Today, the cherry blossoms are at peak bloom along the Tidal Basin, thousands of visitors lining the walkways, cameras raised, breathing in one of Washington, D.C.’s most beloved traditions. But six years ago, those walkways were empty.
In March 2020, the world came to a sudden halt, and so did the National Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual celebration that draws over 1.5 million people and has long been a hallmark of joy, togetherness, and the arrival of spring.
As everything started to shut down, VIVA’s founder was driving home from work when she heard the Cherry Blossom Festival wouldn’t happen—and was so saddened.
She knew VIVA had the power to help transform this beloved in-person tradition into a digital experience that people could enjoy from their living rooms.
Something moved her to make a call to the Festival organizers and put forth the idea of a virtual Cherry Blossom Festival. She got a resounding yes.
From that moment, VIVA was all in.
Together, we moved fast.
- Live bloom cams overlooking the Jefferson Memorial.
- Virtual performances from artists who had been slated for the main stage.
- Interactive activities, online auctions, and creative ways to keep a community connected when gathering in person simply wasn’t possible.
It was one of the most meaningful projects we’ve ever been part of, proof that when unexpected circumstances arise, creativity answers. Read about it here in the Washington Business Journal.
At VIVA Creative, that spirit of ingenuity has always been at our core. For over two decades, we’ve been in the business of bringing people together through experiences that matter—whether that’s a global streaming event, a trade show floor that stops people in their tracks, or a brand activation that sparks real human connection.
Think about how far our industry has come since then. Live events didn’t just bounce back after the pandemic, they soared past pre-pandemic heights, fueled by a world hungry to gather again.
And now, with AI reshaping every industry it touches, experiential is entering its most exciting chapter yet. The tools are more powerful, the canvases are bigger, and the possibilities for human connection are deeper than ever.
So as the blossoms peak again this spring, we’re reminded of something simple and powerful: the best creative work happens when you refuse to let circumstances limit your imagination.
